September 1, 1938 – October 11, 2008
Alton Nehemiah Ellis was born in Trench Town, Kingston. He was a prominent singer, songwriter, producer and concert promoter. He later became known as the ‘Godfather of Rocksteady’.
While growing up he and his younger sister, Hortense, started out like many other Jamaican performers, by competing in well-known talent shows like Vere John’s Opportunity Hour.
In 1959 the R&B song “Muriel”, recorded as part of the duo Alton & Eddie with producer Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, topped the Jamaican charts. Due to the success of “Muriel”, Ellis became a regular and a constant presence on Jamaica’s music scene in the late 60’s and early 70’s.
His smooth and soulful vocal style kept him on top with Ska, Rocksteady, and later Reggae chart-toppers. Most of Ellis’ hits have become instant classics. Alton Ellis holds a special place in Jamaica Music History.
Hits include:
- “Muriel”
- “I’m Just A Guy”
- “Girl I’ve Got a Date”
- “Ain’t that Loving You”
- “Weeping Willow”
- …and scores of other classics
