The Creator of Booyaka

After earning her Masters Degree in Educational Media Technology, and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism & Media at The University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States, Sandra chose not to contribute to the “brain drain” but returned home to Jamaica to create and produce programmes for JBC Television and Radio.

These programmes included Entertainment, Information features, and Magazine type documentaries which reflected her career objective of promoting new and exciting concepts to strengthen and enhance Education, Entertainment and Information.

Sandra is a Television and Radio Producer who has been working within the Jamaican Media for the last 20 years. Some of the companies she worked for include Lorimar Television from Burbank, California, JBC, IRIE FM, TVJ, HOT 102 & KLAS FM.

She was there in the early days of IRIE FM when Radio took a turn in Jamaica to feature the local music as priority. Back then her role was News and Feature Producer, later it became Marketing and Website Management.

Sandra soon returned to her love of TV and Production, and made a significant contribution to the locally produced Soap Opera, Royal Palm Estate, as Production Manager.

In 1998, she conceptualized and produced the innovative and popular TV morning magazine programme, Smile Jamaica. The copyright of the show was later bought by Television Jamaica. During her time as Producer of Smile Jamaica, the show grew to a 72% market share. Smile Jamaica has been and still is a consistent part of Morning Television, not just in Jamaica, but worldwide through www.1spotmedia.com
More recently, Sandra has brought her love of Production and Media to the classroom, teaching for the Department of Communication Studies as an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) for Northern Caribbean University in Manchester, Jamaica.

Her passion for Inspiring young people has always been a part of her dream. Sandra has organized Internet chats with top reggae entertainers, as well as assisted in creating websites for the likes of Tony Rebel and others. Writing artiste bios, and becoming involved in label development & design has been a positive advantage, especially due to the amount of talented performers and studios in Jamaica.

Throughout her career Sandra has worked with, interviewed, promoted or worked on projects involving Shaggy, Luciano, Sean Paul, Tony Rebel, Beenie Man, Bounti Killa, Beres Hammond, Singing Melody, Judy Mowatt, Tarrus Riley and Marcia Griffiths.

Sandra has created a unique combination of 2 of her great loves, Music & History, to create Booyaka in 2007. The idea was born out of a need to document the contributions of great music legends and to pay tribute to them, by recognizing them for what they have done. A Booyaka Music Scholarship is in the works.

The unique idea originally started as a Documentary, and morphed into a Concert and an Exhibition. It became a professional and educational Exhibition highlighting Jamaica’s rich music legacy. Booyaka was exhibited at the National Library of Jamaica to rave reviews. This rich catalogue of information will soon become Jamaica’s first Online Music Museum, to be launched soon. Support from the Merchandising arm will help to bring the Museum to life.

Booyaka has been recognized, endorsed, and supported by a host of industry professionals, individuals, schools and companies from inside and outside of Jamaica.

Sandra will work along with the very talented team, to create the most awesome virtual experience ever. Booyaka!!
