December 9, 1940 – 2005
Clancy Eccles was a noted Singer and Songwriter. In the General Elections of 1972 and 1976 in Jamaica, Clancy played a critical role in the victories for the PNP. He was key in the landslide triumphs, when he used music to bring out the youth vote for the PNP. Eccles galvanized the musical bandwagon that accompanied Manley around the island.
He first recorded for Producer Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One Label. Later he partnered with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, where he sang and produced a few songs. For the 1980 Election he produced, “My Leader Born Yah”, by Neville ‘Struggle’ Martin. It was a massive hit, and that song is still talked about even today, especially during election time.
Eccles was a known stage show promoter, talent scout and producer. For all his contributions to the development of Jamaica’s music and politics, when Clancy Eccles died from complications of a stroke in 2005, he was largely forgotten by an industry he helped to shape.
Hits include:
- “Feel The Rhythm”
- “My Leader Born Yah” (Producer)
- “Say What You’re Saying” (Producer)
