Few artists had the impact on Jamaica’s dancehall scene as Sugar Minott.  His releases provided the blueprints for the rise of the contemporary dancehall style.  Some argue that Sugar was the creator of Dancehall.   He was equally influential as a producer, and his extraordinarily popular sound system helped launch numerous new DJs into the limelight.

“Sugar” started his career as part of a singing trio, the African Brothers.  He later worked as a Singer, guitarist and percussionist at the top-rated Studio One with Coxone Dodd.  Sugar Minott had numerous hits.  His Biggest hit was “Good Thing Going”, which reached number 4 on the British Singles Charts.

Minott became a pioneer of the dancehall genre when he laid new vocal tracks over original 1960s backing tapes instead of live musicians.  This method was commonplace for live shows, but Minott brought the practice in the recording studio, sparking a revolution in Jamaican music.

Sugar made significant contributions to all styles of Reggae – Roots, Lover’s Rock, Computerized Techno and Dancehall.  His hits are indeed unforgettable.
