October 9, 1944 – September 11, 1987
Herbert Winston McIntosh, Peter Tosh, was born in Grange Hill, Westmoreland, and then moved to Belmont as a young child. He used to play music in his community to earn a few shillings. Peter left the wester parish for the more exciting Kingston city at the age of 15. Along with teenage friends Bob Marley and Neville “Bunny” Livingstone, he formed the Wailing Wailers. The three men became the core members of the band The Wailers (1963-1976).
After the Wailers, he established himself as a strong solo artiste. His first lead vocal was “Hoot Nanny Hoot.” He was a strong advocate for Rastafari and Ganja. Peter earned himself many die-hard fans from every level of society.
Tosh was awarded the Grammy Award in 1987 for the album, “No Nuclear War.”
He was killed in a home invasion in 1987 when gun men entered his home and demanded money. Three persons died after the incident. “Doc” Brown, an associate, was killed instantly, popular Jamaican Radio Disc Jock, Jeff “Free-I” Dixon and Tosh died later at University Hospital in Kingston. Peter Tosh was 43 years old.
