Born Sonia Eloise Durrant in the eastern parish of St. Thomas on June 21,1931 and grew up in Kingston.
Sonia Pottinger also known as ‘Miss Pottinger’ had a huge success from the late 1960s with the Tip Top, High Note and Gay Feet labels. She came into the business on the heels of her husband, Lyndon Pottinger, an engineer who had measured success as a producer in the mid-1960s. Married to Mr. Pottinger, Sonia opened her Tip Top Records Shop in 1965 and began to record musicians in 1966.The first single she released was “Every Night” by Joe White Chuck.
Other artists recorded during this period include Roland Alphonso. In the 1970s, she produced albums by Bob Andy, Marcia Griffiths, Culture, U-Roy, and Big Youth. Her most popular production is Culture’s Harder Than the Rest album, released in 1978. She retired from the music business in 1985.
Sonia Pottinger, OD died at her home in Kingston, Jamaica, on 3rd of November 2010, after suffering for some time with Alzheimer’s disease.
